The Art of Slow Travel: How a Sound Healer Recalibrates in the Algarve

There is something about the light and the rhythm of the Algarve that keeps calling me back—a deliberate choice to step away from the fast-paced energy of New York and sink into a different pace.

As a sound healer, people often ask me if I find it easy to "turn off" the second I travel. The answer is a very clear "No." It is not easy. Even with the best intentions and years of practice, it usually takes me a few days to really let the work drama fade and stop mentally checking my inbox. Our nervous systems aren't light switches; they are more like large ships that take a while to turn around. Acknowledging that "buffer period" allows me to be kinder to myself while I wait for my brain to finally catch up with my location.

The Science of the Arrival

Recalibration starts before I even land. I’m a big fan of the Timeshifter app; it’s my secret weapon for adjusting my internal clock and smoothing out the edges of jet lag. By managing light exposure and caffeine intake based on the app's data, I can arrive feeling like myself rather than a foggy, exhausted version of a traveler.

Leaning Into the Flow

When I travel, I prefer not to have a strict schedule if I can help it. I find that when a trip is centered in nature or taken during the off-season, it’s much easier to let the day unfold naturally. Even if the weather isn't perfect—as I experienced on my second trip—the slower pace of the off-season offers its own kind of quiet.

Unless it’s a ticketed event that I know will sell out, I rarely book tours or tickets in advance. I want the freedom to decide that at 2:00 PM, I’d rather go for a walk along the cliffs than be tied to a reservation. On this trip, that flexibility allowed me to lean into exactly what I needed:

  • Local Practice: I recently attended a sound bath and took Yoga and Pilates classes at Algarve Alchemy. Seeing how other practitioners hold space is a beautiful way to stay grounded.

  • Community Flavors: I enjoyed meeting friends each morning for coffee and conversation (and maybe a pastel de nata!)—a simple, warm ritual that is perfect and reflects the slowness of life in Portugal.

  • Cliffs and Trails: Hiking is my favorite way to regulate my nervous system. Even when the weather was a bit moody, being outside in the salt air is the quickest way I know to find my center.

The Power of Choice

On one trip to the region, I attended a retreat that offered a wonderful mix of yoga, surfing, and time to simply lounge. The food was amazing and healthy, which is always a highlight for me. But the most valuable part was the permission to choose. I realized I didn't have to participate in every "scheduled" activity—like surfing—to get exactly what I needed from the experience.

Finding Your Own Pace

Whether you’re in New York or the Algarve, the goal is the same: to listen to your internal rhythm. Sometimes, the most adventurous thing you can do on vacation is give yourself the space to decide what happens next—once the emails finally stop echoing in your head.
