The Best Way to Spend a Freezing NYC Saturday (PJs Highly Encouraged)
I recently had a pop-up at Flok & Five Pillars Yoga, and it happened to fall on one of those very cold New York City Saturdays. You know the ones—where the wind is biting, and every fiber of your being is telling you to just stay under the covers.
It got me thinking about why sound healing is actually the perfect winter "activity."
Usually, when we think of wellness or "doing something" for ourselves in the city, it involves gear, effort, or at least putting on real pants. But the beauty of a winter sound bath is that it’s essentially an invitation to do the exact opposite.
The "No-Effort" Sanctuary
At the pop-up, the studio was so cozy that I actually had to turn off the space heaters! It became this warm, dim little sanctuary away from the freezing wind.
If you’ve never been to a session, here is the "dress code" I always recommend for these cold weekends:
Wear your softest PJs or loungewear.
Bring your thickest socks.
Curl up under a heavy blanket.
There’s something so restorative about being in a room full of people who are all collectively giving themselves permission to just... rest. No "working out," no checking boxes—just lying there and letting the frequencies of the crystal bowls and ocean drums do the heavy lifting for your nervous system.
Why it works when it’s cold
When we're freezing, our bodies naturally bracing against the cold. We hold tension in our shoulders and our breath gets shallow. Sound healing helps signal to your brain that it’s finally safe to "thaw out." Your body will begin to release tension when it receives that signal.
By the time the session ended, the "VERY cold" Saturday outside didn't feel quite so daunting because everyone was walking out with a regulated nervous system and a literal internal glow.
Let’s keep it cozy
If you missed this one, don't worry, there are more cozy sessions on the horizon. Until then, remember that on these freezing NYC days, sometimes the most "productive" thing you can do is find a warm corner and just breathe.
