Why the Ocean Drum is the Secret Weapon for a Restless Mind

In my sound healing practice, I rely on a small, intentional toolkit: crystal bowls, a chime, and the ocean drum. While the bowls provide those deep, ethereal tones that most people associate with a sound bath, the ocean drum has a very specific—and very scientific—job to do for your nervous system.

If you’ve ever felt that total silence is actually "too loud" or even a bit anxiety-inducing, you’re not alone. That is where the ocean drum comes in.

The Power of Pink Noise

Most of us are familiar with "White Noise," but the ocean drum actually produces what is known as Pink Noise.

Unlike the static-heavy sound of white noise, pink noise has a deeper, more balanced frequency. It mimics the sounds of the natural world—think of rustling leaves, steady rain, or the rhythmic waves I’ve been listening to this week on the cliffs in Lagos. For a restless "NYC brain," pink noise is a secret weapon. It gives the mind just enough to focus on so that it can finally stop scanning for the next "to-do" or digital notification.

Washing Away the Mental Chatter

The beauty of the ocean drum is that it isn't melodic; it’s organic. As I tilt the drum, the thousands of tiny beads inside create a "washing" sensation. In my sessions, I often see people’s breathing physically shift the moment the drum starts. It’s as if the sound signals to the brain that the "storm" of the day is over and the tide is finally coming in. It’s a literal recalibration of your internal rhythm.

The 20-Inch Immersive Experience

I’m often asked about the tools in my kit, and for me, the size of the drum is a major factor. I use a 20-inch ocean drum, which allows for a much broader, more resonant soundscape. Because of its size and the intensity of the experience it creates, I save this instrument for "special occasions"—sessions where we really want to go deep into that restorative, watery state of mind.

Join Me in March

I’ll be bringing the 20-inch ocean drum out of the studio for a very special event this March at Om City Yoga on the Upper East Side. If you’re feeling like your nervous system needs a total "rinse" from the winter stress, this is the perfect time to experience it.
