I Didn't Realize How Burned Out I Was

Sound healing is one of the most powerful tools I know for burnout. It helps your body come out of the constant stress mode that burnout keeps you in, so you can rest, think clearly, and make better decisions about what needs to change. It works best as part of a bigger toolbox, and I learned that the long way.

The Burnout I Didn't Recognize

I realized I was burned out in 2025. I was getting more sound healing events than ever before, I was taking an intense three-month business course, and I was doing all of it on the side of my full-time corporate job.

Looking back, though, it started much earlier. I'd been burned out in past jobs too, I just didn't have a name for it. I pushed through. I partied on the weekends and went to happy hour, or I spent my weekends lying on the couch watching TV most of the day. I was easily irritated and could snap at the smallest things.

My body was keeping score, too. When my anxiety peaks and I've stopped looking after myself, a rash appears above my left eye. It's not always burnout, but it's always a sign to slow down.

What Burnout Actually Is

The World Health Organization describes burnout as a syndrome resulting from chronic workplace stress that hasn't been successfully managed. It has three parts:

  • Exhaustion: feeling depleted, with no energy left

  • Mental distance: feeling negative or cynical about your work

  • Reduced effectiveness: feeling like you can't do your job as well as you used to

If you read that list and thought "that's just how work feels," that's worth paying attention to.

General Signs You May Be Burned Out

Sometimes burnout looks like a whole weekend on the couch. Often it's quieter:

  • You can't shut the laptop, or stop thinking about work even when you do.

  • You keep reaching for your phone to check email.

  • Your basic needs slip. You skip meals, forget to drink water, or stop making time to move.

  • Your body is tense or sore, especially your back, neck, or shoulders.

  • You're snapping at people, whether loved ones or coworkers.

  • You're not sleeping well, even when you're exhausted.

  • You say you're not stressed, but you can't sit still.

Why Time Off Isn't Enough

I love a vacation, and I could usually shake off some of the burnout while I was away. But when I came back, I often felt worse, because of everything that had piled up while I was gone. Even checking my email on vacation could ruin my mood for hours, sometimes the rest of the day, just knowing what I was going back to.

That's because burnout doesn't only live in your calendar. It can live in your body for years. A week off doesn't undo that. Neither does one night out with friends or a date night. Exercise and yoga help, and everyone should move their body, but in my experience they only reach part of it. You can push stress into a hard workout without actually releasing it.

Where Sound Healing Comes In

Sound goes deeper. In a sound bath, you're not doing anything at all. You lie down, and the sound gives your nervous system a steady, calming input. Your body relaxes first, and your mind follows.

Research supports this. A 2023 randomized controlled trial in the European Journal of Investigation in Health, Psychology and Education found that a singing bowl session increased heart rate variability, a key marker of the body's "rest and recover" response, and reduced anxiety more than progressive muscle relaxation.

I've also seen it in the people I work with. New moms have told me they slept through the night after a sound bath, and that they felt relaxed enough to take a little time for themselves instead of feeling needed 24/7.

"I Don't Have Time"

This is what I hear most, and here's my answer: you have a few minutes, and that's all you need to start.

Three to five minutes of sound is enough to make a small difference. On days when you have half an hour, take it.

And if you're someone who says you can't sit still, you're usually the person who needs a sound bath most. Those are often the people who have trouble sleeping and who insist they're not stressed, while the signs are all there. Ignore them long enough, and they compound.

My Toolbox Today

I no longer have a corporate job, but I still have a lot on my plate. I'm building a business in a new country, making new friends, meeting new people, and networking, all at once. I still have to watch my own tendency to overwork.

What helps is having more than one tool:

  • A morning routine I keep, even on busy days

  • Somatic work to release what my body is holding

  • Movement, including pickleball and signing up for exercise classes

  • Sound baths, kirtan, and mantra

  • Playing my bowls, even for a few minutes

None of these fixes everything on its own. Together, they get me back to myself faster, so I can handle whatever's on my plate from a calmer place.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can sound healing help with burnout? Yes. Sound healing can be a powerful tool for burnout because it helps your body come out of stress mode, making it easier to rest, sleep, and think clearly. It works best alongside other support, like exercise, a daily practice, talking to a therapist, and addressing what's causing the burnout in the first place.

How long does it take to recover from burnout? It varies. Burnout can build up in your body over years, so recovery usually takes regular, consistent support rather than a single break or session.

How often should I do a sound bath for burnout? Start with three to five minutes of sound on most days, plus a full sound bath about once a month. During especially stressful seasons, every one to two weeks can help.

Is a vacation enough to recover from burnout? A vacation can help in the short term, but the benefits often fade quickly once you're back. Small, regular habits that help your body reset tend to make a bigger difference over time.
